The purpose of the Danville Home Repair Program & Blitz is to help the city’s most vulnerable homeowners (elderly, veterans, disabled, and low-income) make needed exterior repairs and improvements to their homes. Priority is given to repairs that serve as preventative maintenance and that improve safety and resident mobility. All materials and labor are provided free to eligible homeowners for the following repairs:
- Minor exterior repairs and carpentry (replacement of hand rails, porches, steps, wheelchair ramps, gutters, fencing, etc.)
- Exterior painting (shutters, trim, doors, railings, porches, etc.)
- Pressure washing
- Yard clean-up, trimming and debris/brush removal
- Safety-related improvements
The program is a partnership between the DNDC and Union Church (810 Main Street, Danville). While the DNDC raises funds, publicizes the program, works with neighborhood groups to identify homeowners in need, and screens applications, Union Church evaluates the work requested, and gathers needed materials and volunteers to complete the improvements.
The program is currently funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region. Applications are now being accepted. To apply, please download the four-page application in the link below and submit it in-person or through the door slot at 502 Franklin Street in Danville, by mail to P.O. Box 3549, Danville, VA 24543. You may also scan and email the completed application to Repair@DanvilleNDC.org. Call Ernecia at 434-799-5099 if you have questions or would like an application mailed to you.
In addition, to stabilize the surrounding community, problem properties in the neighborhood will be cleared of trash and overgrown brush on Home Repair Blitz Days. Blitz Days occur in targeted neighborhoods up to four times a year (usually Spring and Fall) on a Saturday. Blitz Days are planned in partnership with the resident associations (such as a Neighborhood Watch group) in targeted communities to identify up to 10 eligible homeowners for repairs on that one day. The program began in November 2018 in the Westmoreland neighborhood with help from the Westmoreland Neighborhood Organization. If you would like your neighborhood considered for a Blitz Day, call Ernecia at 434-799-5099.
